John Grandy is one of the UK's most exciting young artists. His recent works comprising the Riverside Visions series were all painted in locations accessible on foot from his home in Iffley, Oxford. They are oil on paper and are reminiscent of Bomberg or Nash in terms of medium and colour.

The vibrancy of each landscape leaps from the image. Each one captures the experience of being in the environment in which it was painted. One finds oneself transported from an overgrown meadow burgeoning with nettles and grasses in high summer to sitting damply in dank woodland surrounded by rotting leaves and stagnant water. The viewer can taste the rain, feel the sun and smell the sweet stench of the river.

A sense of place is important to his work. As Grandy says, "My work is as much about visual memory and imagination as direct information. Being outside is what interests me."

Grandy was born in London in 1969 and his early years were spent exploring the canals and woodland of Hanwell. He has been making art since his teens, although he has largely found employment in libraries. He has travelled widely in the Far East but he is now Oxford based. He is married with two young children.
